Description
Step into the vibrant world of Maya Bazaar, my third large-scale original acrylic painting on canvas. This piece is a profound connection to a beloved classic, inspired by the iconic 1957 Indian Telugu film, Mayabazar (Telugu: మాయాబజార్; literally “Market of Illusions”). As the first movie I ever watched, it remains a cherished link to my heritage and a timeless tale of love, deception, and divine intervention that was ahead of its times.
The film is a magical adaptation of the tale Sasirekha Parinayam (Sasirekha’s Marriage), based on the characters from the epic Mahabharata. Subhadra’s son, Abhimanyu, falls in love with Balarama’s daughter Sasirekha and the two are betrothed. However, after the famous dice game in the Mahabharata in which Arjuna and his brothers are robbed of their fortunes and sent into exile, Balarama and Revati refuse to honor their agreement with Subhadra. They instead arrange Sasirekha’s marriage to Lakshmana Kumara, the son of the evil Kaurava Duryodhana, whose true intention is to gain Balarama and Krishna’s support if war with the Pandavas breaks out. Through a series of illusions and trickery, Krishna and Abhimanyu’s cousin Ghatotkacha ensure that Sasirekha and Abhimanyu secretly marry and Balarama and Revati realize their folly.
In this work, I aimed to showcase the core concept of the film: Lord Krishna as the true secret mastermind. He's depicted as the only figure in full, brilliant color, highlighting his importance, yet partially obscured to represent his behind-the-scenes presence. The enigmatic figure in the light orange background embodies the dual identity of Ghatotkacha, whose illusions and wit ensure true love prevails for his impersonation, Sasirekha. Discover key moments from the film woven throughout the canvas, from its grand opening with the pipers to the joyous culmination of the secret wedding.
"Maya Bazaar" is more than a painting; it's a celebration of storytelling, a visual symphony of color and narrative which reimagines cinematic history through a contemporary lens.
