Description
Thiruppavai (2021) is a visual depiction of the Thiruppavai (Tamil: திருப்பாவை), a set of 30 Tamil devotional hymns praising Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, in Vivek Kumavat style. Thiruppavai was composed by the poet-saint Andal, who later married Vishnu.
The sacred cow— an animal that is associated with Lord Krishna, who grew up as a cowherd is the central figure. The dark blue background, symbolizing Krishna, is also comprised of different icons associated with Andal and Krishna: Andal’s pet parrot and flower garland, Krishna’s flute and peacock feather, the Vaishnavite namam, and many more.
In this painting, I wanted to put a spotlight on Andal, as she is the composer of Thiruppavai, so I decided to depict her in all her splendor as a goddess in the cow’s tail.
