Artist's Description

Rakhmabai Raut (completed in 2019) was an Indian activist and doctor who fought against child marriage, which was a common practice then in India. Her efforts led to the Age of Consent Act of 1891, which raised the minimum age for consent of marriage for girls from 10 to 12 years across British India. She was also one of the first female practicing doctors in colonial India and practiced for 35 years.
